Fifty years ago, on April 17, 1961, the Howard S. Wright Construction Company broke ground on the Space Needle project, in a race to finish construction in just one year and four days, in time for the opening of the World’s Fair.

That made April 17, 2011 the perfect day to kick off our 50th Anniversary celebration! Family members of key players in the construction project got together with Bagley Wright, the sole surviving member, to present their recollections from the Needle’s first days. And they helped to launch this website, in the hopes that all kinds of people will contribute their stories and photos of special times at the Space Needle — creating the world’s most complete Space Needle memory archive.
